What is your school’s approach to training?
We strive to empower our students to improve their focus, confidence, self-esteem, strength, and physical fitness, among other positive traits.
Out training is based on our core principles:
Humility
Integrity
Gentleness
Perseverance
Self-Control
Unbreakable Spirit
How long has your program been around?
Our school, in its current form, launched in January 2026. However, our program has its origins in Cartersville Martial Arts and Self Defense, which closed its doors in 2025. Cartersville Martial Arts and Self Defense was founded in 2004 by Master Michael Wison and Master Angie Wilson. We are indebted to the Wilsons for their years of service to the Cartersville community, and are honored to have the opportunity to keep their school’s legacy alive.
What kind of training and qualifications do your instructors have?
All of our classes are led by a our Chief Instructor (Grandmaster Pereira) or a Head Instructor. Head Instructors wear black uniforms. Our Head Instructors are certified by Universal Martial Art, and receive regular specialized instructor training. All Head Instructors are adults, and have achieved the minimum rank of 1st Degree Black Belt.
Universal Martial Art also certifies and trains Assistant Instructors. These instructors wear blue uniforms. Assistant Instructors are certified via. Universal Martial Art. They have achieved the minimum rank of Gold Belt, and must be at least 14 years of age. All Assistant Instructors are closely supervised by The Chief Instructor or a Head Instructor while they are training students.
Becoming an Universal Martial Art instructor is an honor that is offered to students who demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities. Instructor certification is only offered to students via a special invitation from Grandmaster Pereira.
What about the risk of injury?
Our program is very safe. Our practice sessions do not involve intentional direct attacks to the body, such as punches and kicks. These techniques are practiced using equipment such as air shields and similar safety devices. As is the case with any physical activity, there is some risk of injury. However, our highly trained instructors provide close supervision to minimize this risk as much as possible.
What about competition?
Universal Martial Arts is not a competitive school. Competitive events, such as tournaments, are not a part of our program. Instead of teaching out students how to “score points,” we focus on practical strategies that develop self-defense techniques. We encourage folks to compete with themselves, rather than “against” one another. If your performance today is better than it was a month ago, then you win!
How long does it take the average person to earn a black belt?
Short answer: The average person does not earn a black belt.
Earning a black belt takes a great deal of time, effort, concentration, dedication, and knowledge. It is a symbol of outstanding character and an excellent understanding and recognition of our core principles. Our goal is to present every student with a black belt that literally has his or her name on it! This journey typically takes at least three years, though the time that is needed to reach this milestone is highly dependent on how often the student trains, among many other variables.
Remember, A black belt is a white belt, who didn’t quit!
